Abstract As an important gathering center and junction, airports are increasingly being viewed as catalysts for local economic development. But unforeseen rapid development around some domestic airports has saturated the area and choked the area with traffic and building. This paper is intended to help explain these situations by providing a framework for understanding the industry distribution and planning for development around new or expanded airports, trying to arouse some specific measures.
Taking New Baiyun Airport in Guangzhou as an example, this paper discusses its developing background, location selection, distribution model and planning principle. Along with the expansion of the flowing amount of passengers, goods, information and capital, there is a wide range of business activities around the international airport which leads to various types of industries in different periods, such as passenger services, information technology, pharmaceuticals, new materials, and real estate, etc. In addition, the host city's economic position has a direct impact on the type and mixture of the industries.
Airport economy is at the economic location adjacent to transport hub on the whole. The formation and development of the area adjacent to airport suffer double impacts of host city and the airport in the different stages. There are three distribution modes of growth poles, axes and networks. The encirclement distribution model highly respected domestically is an ideal model within unclear development stage in authors' view. Many scholars have come up with the airport index concept. But being lack with detailed information and history information in major domestic airports, it is difficult to compute airport index.
After discussing the feasibility of quantitative study on industry distribution, the paper tries to overlay the location of industry distribution with grid analyses methods. It converts distribution factors to grid data, by using GIS spatial analysis techniques for site suitabile analysis to determine the layout of each industry. At last, the paper advances some measures of planning and guiding for industry distribution related to airport, and displays the planning programs of Huadu District and Baiyun District in Guangzhou.
